Microsoft office 2008 for mac? does it come with the mac when you buy it?

im planning to buy a macbook for highschool, but i know that if i create documents on the mac it won't be compatible with my other pcs in my house.

at school all the macs come with the microsoft word and stuff. is it because they have the installation CD for it

or does the mac come with the whole program?

the program iwork which you can buy for much cheaper is compatible. you can save the documents in doc form, although i am not sure about the new ext docx. you can also try open source applications. like: google documents, neo office or openoffice, all are free to use and are fully compatible with ms office.

yes you would have to pay for ms office separately as well as iwork. you will have 30 day trials on both software when purchasing a new mac. check out apple.com store for prices or go with the open source apps. i use neo office but love iwork also.

The version of Office that comes with Macs is a 30 day trial of the whole thing. It will work fine with Windows versions of Office, though you might all have to save files in a version that everyone can agree on.

Microsoft Office Home and Student Edition is $150, a big savings off the regular price, and comes with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
That will depend on what comes with it from the store. Some stores may include a Microsoft Office Suite and others might not. Odds are though that it will not include it as the software is often costly and the stores want to keep their prices low. Schools and businesses usually buy copies of office in bulk using reusable CD keys. This is how they can install copies on all of their computers without 10,000 different CD keys.

In short, you will more than likely need to go buy the software.
