Microsoft automatic updates?

I have my computer set for automatic updates--there's a yellow shield on the bottom right telling me I need to do updates --but people tell me it should be the microsoft logo. What is the yellow shield? Should I do the express installations and how do I tell what they are before I do them? Thx!

The Windows update tray icon is a yellow shield, not the Microsoft Logo. Whomever told you it should be the logo is incorrect.

To determine what patches are being installed, click the balloon that appears or double click the shield. When the wizard opens, choose 'Custom Install'. It will take you to a screen of check boxes so you can see the names of the patches being installed. If you're still wanting more information, visit the Microsoft web site and type in the KB number associated with the patch and you'll get a long detailed page about that specific update.

I always do 'Custom Install' so I can see what's being patched. That way, if there's a problem and I need to roll back, I know where to begin when looking for things to remove in the 'Add/Remove Software' control panel.

It's legit. Go ahead and download the updates. Do express installations. You can check your add/remove programs (Windows XP) to see what updates you've downloaded. Microsoft's website lets you do your own without them doing it automatically. That lets you choose which ones and explains what each update does.
I got the same thing today, and if you have MS, go for it, it's safe! Up dated 9 things for me.
It's just the Tray icon for the Microsoft Update process. Proceed.
