You will not find the Product Key on your disk. You will not find it on the hard drive. It is scrambled in the registry. You might find it on the original packaging or on a sticker attached to your computer if you bought the computer new from a store or directly from a manufacturer like Dell.
You can go to: www.magicaljellybean.com and use their key finder program. It will tell you the Product Key assigned to your computer. But if the Product Key is blocked by Microsoft, it won't do you any good.
Part of the problem is how Microsoft does their validation scan. Every XP has a unique 25 digit Product Key assigned to it. As an individual, if you went to your local Best Buy or Circuit City and bought 100 copies of XP, you would see 100 different Product Keys.
When you install the XP on a computer, it automatically compares various components like motherboard, CPU, etc. and then creates a unique Product Identification Number. (If you right click My Computer -%26gt; Properties, you will see that PID.) Each time you start the computer, during the initial 20 second or so time delay, the computer is verifying the Product Key with your components to arrive at the PID. If the PID matches what's stored in the computer, you're good to go. The validation scan does the same thing. If the PID does not match, it's automatically assumed you have a pirated copy of XP.
